Planning a family holiday in Bali and looking for something everyone can enjoy?
Family surfing in Bali is a fun way to spend time together, try something new, and enjoy the island from the water.
You don’t need to be an experienced surfer to give it a try. Bali has several beaches that are suitable for beginners, and with the right surf lesson, both parents and children can learn the basics in a safe and relaxed environment.
Why Try Family Surfing in Bali?
A family holiday is often about doing something different from your normal routine. Instead of spending every day sightseeing or relaxing by the pool, why not get everyone in the water?
Surfing can be a great activity for families because you can learn together, encourage each other, and celebrate those small moments when someone finally stands up on the board.
For children, it can also be a fun way to build confidence and become more comfortable in the ocean. For parents, it is a chance to enjoy an active experience with their kids rather than simply watching from the beach.
And don’t worry if nobody in the family has surfed before. Family surfing in Bali is suitable for beginners, and the first lesson usually starts with the basics before heading into the water.
Can Kids Learn to Surf in Bali?
Yes. Children can learn to surf, but the lesson should always be adjusted to their age, swimming ability, confidence in the water, and the ocean conditions on the day.
Younger children may need more encouragement and shorter activities, while older children can usually follow more of the basic surfing techniques.
The most important thing is that children feel comfortable. Surfing should be fun, not something they feel pressured to do.
At Stoked Surf Bali, family lessons can be arranged for parents and children, with the lesson adapted to the group’s experience and ability.
What Happens During a Family Surf Lesson?
If it is your family’s first time surfing, you may wonder what the lesson actually looks like.
A beginner surf lesson normally starts on the beach. The instructor will explain some basic surfing techniques, how to position yourself on the board, how to paddle, and how to stand up.
The instructor will also explain important ocean and surf safety rules before everyone enters the water.
Once the family is comfortable with the basics, it is time to try the waves.
Don’t expect everyone to stand up on their first attempt. Falling off the board is completely normal, especially during your first lesson. The fun part is trying again and seeing your progress.
Is Family Surfing Safe?
Safety should always come first, especially when children are involved.
Surfing conditions can change from day to day, so the instructor will consider the waves, weather, and ability of the participants when planning the lesson.
Children should also be comfortable in the water and follow the instructor’s instructions throughout the session.
A qualified instructor can help beginners understand how to enter the water, where to surf, and what to do when they fall from the board.
For families, having an instructor who is used to teaching beginners and children can make the experience much more relaxed.
Why Kuta Beach Is Popular for Beginner Surfing
For many first-time surfers, Kuta Beach is a convenient place to start surfing in Bali.
The beach is easily accessible and has long been popular with beginner surfers. The sandy beach and beginner-friendly surf areas can make it a good option for families who are trying surfing for the first time.
However, surf conditions are different every day. Your instructor will choose the most suitable area based on the conditions and your family’s ability.
What Should You Bring for Family Surfing?
You don’t need to bring a lot of equipment for your first surf lesson.
Usually, you should bring:
- Swimwear
- Towel
- Sunscreen
- Water
- A change of clothes
- A positive attitude!
The surf school provides the necessary surfing equipment for the lesson, such as the surfboard and leash.
It is also a good idea to apply sunscreen before going to the beach. You will be spending a lot of time in the sun, even if you are only in the water for part of the lesson.
What If One Family Member Is Better at Surfing?
That’s completely fine.
Families don’t always have the same level of surfing experience. One person may have surfed several times before, while another may be standing on a surfboard for the first time.
A good family surf lesson can be adjusted to different abilities. The instructor can give beginners more guidance while allowing more confident surfers to work on their own skills.
The goal is not to see who is the best surfer in the family. The goal is to enjoy the experience together.
Make Your Bali Holiday More Memorable
There are plenty of things to do in Bali, but some of the best holiday memories come from experiences you share with the people you travel with.
Maybe your child catches their first wave.
Maybe Dad falls off the board five times before finally standing up.
Maybe Mum turns out to be the best surfer in the family.
Those are the moments you will probably remember long after your Bali holiday is over.
Family surfing in Bali is not about being perfect. It is about getting in the water, having fun, and trying something new together.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is family surfing in Bali suitable for young children?
Yes, family surfing can be a fun activity for children as well as adults. The lesson will be adjusted based on the child’s age, confidence, swimming ability, and the surf conditions. The instructor will make sure the child understands the basics and feels comfortable before going into the water.
2. What should we bring for a family surf lesson?
For your family surf lesson, we recommend bringing swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, drinking water, and a change of clothes. Stoked Surf Bali provides the surfing equipment needed for the lesson, so you don’t need to bring your own surfboard.
3. Can we book a private family surf lesson?
Yes. Families can book a private surf lesson with Stoked Surf Bali. Keeping the lesson private means your family can learn together without being mixed into a larger group. The lesson can also be adjusted according to the different experience levels within your family.
4. What happens if the surf conditions are not suitable for our family?
Safety always comes first. Surf conditions can change depending on the weather, tides, and waves. Our instructors will assess the conditions and choose the most suitable area for the lesson. If conditions are not suitable for the planned location, we can discuss the best alternative with you.
5. How Many Instructors Will You Have?
At Stoked Surf Bali, we keep our surf lessons small so that each student can get enough attention from the instructor.
Our usual ratio is 1 instructor for every 2 students. This means that if your family has 5 people, we will arrange 3 instructors for your family surf lesson.
For example, two family members will surf with one instructor, another two will have a second instructor, and the fifth person will have their own instructor. This allows our instructors to give more individual guidance and adjust the lesson according to each person’s ability.
This is especially helpful when family members have different levels of experience. One person might be completely new to surfing, while another may already feel comfortable in the water.
Rather than having a large group sharing one instructor, our small instructor-to-student ratio means your family can receive more guidance throughout the lesson while still enjoying the experience together.
So whether you’re a family of three, four, or five, we can arrange the lesson based on the number of participants and their experience level.
